Kratom tea is a popular beverage, especially in Southeast Asia, where it has replaced the daily consumption of tea and coffee because of its invigorating and energy boosting capabilities. This customary tea is prepared using the leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree which contains alkaloids which are known to provide stimulating and sedative effects to the mind and body. The primary reason why tea is preferred to chewing the leaves directly is that it tends to diminish the bitterness.
Dosage variations
The dosage varies as per one’s preference, tolerance, body weight, and metabolism and depending on these factors one might need to use quantities more or less than the suggested ones. However, first-timers should always bear in mind the cautions. Following are the recommended quantities of powder to be used in tea for the desired effects:
For a very slight effect- 1 gram
For a modest effect- 3 grams
For an intoxicating effect- 5 grams
For a strong effect- 10 grams
For a very robust effect- 15 grams or more
Making Kratom Tea
There are many recipes to make Kratom tea out of this herb, which is just minor modifications to the basic recipe. Here is a step to step and a simple method to prepare this beverage.
Ingredients:
- A kettle
- Kratom powder or dried leaves
- Drinking water
- Any simple sieve or cheesecloth
- A source of heat
Method
- Bring about 1-1.5 cup of drinking water to boil in a kettle or on the stove.
- Add pre-measured kratom powder or leaves as per your need. Generally, 5-10 grams of powder is used.
- Stir the mixture for about 15 minutes.
- Pass this mixture through a sieve and collect the liquid in a cup.
- Some people prefer mixing this tea with regular black tea, coffee or fruit juices. To overcome the bitterness, honey or sugar can be added as well. It can also be consumed as an iced tea during hot summers.
- Vigorous boiling for a long time of dried leaves with a little water can lead to the preparation of a paste that can be stored for later use to prepare the tea. Some people, even consume pellets prepared from this paste by directly swallowing it, which eliminates the need to mix it with any other substance to surpass the bitter taste.
- This recipe can be used to prepare more or less quantity of tea by appropriately adjusting the quantity of water and powder or leaves used. One can also prepare enough tea for future use and refrigerate it for up to 5 days.
- Another way to store it for longer periods is by combining it with alcohol. However, the effects that this combination will deliver might not be suitable for everyone and hence is not very strongly recommended, especially for the newbies.
- When refrigerated, the alkaloid content tends to be settled at the bottom due to the density differences and to maintain the effects of the herb, the sediment should be boiled and re-dissolved.
Effects & Benefits
If consumed in smaller quantities, the tea, like all other forms, is more stimulating and is a great alternative to caffeine. The beverage tends to impart wakefulness and a better thinking ability without causing anxiety or uneasiness.
However, when consumed in larger quantities or towards the later part of the day, the sedative effects begin to dominate due to the increased concentration of alkaloids. This causes mood enhancement and also serves to help overcome insomnia. One tends to experience serenity and tranquility, which are the preferred effects.
